If the thickness rumor holds, this is the first premium iPhone since iPhone X without Face ID. The reason is not that Apple suddenly dislikes faces. A 4.5 mm open body almost cannot take TrueDepth.
The replacement has lived on iPad Air and iPad mini for years: Touch ID in the power button. Gurman does not treat that as a disaster. Mac and iPad users already know fingerprints. The event will likely sell it as the cost of being thinner, not as a feature retreat.
Keep the split clean: no Face ID is not no selfie camera. Both displays get a front camera. Face unlock and a selfie camera are different parts. Leaks often mash them together.
