Cook treated the foldable as a four-year job. Gen 1 does not have to beat a slab at every spec

New reporting revisits Tim Cook's role. Internally they admit durability still trails a regular iPhone. The goal is first in the foldable class.

Gurman's newer piece stretches the timeline. The foldable iPhone is not a surprise program from this year. It is four years of work pushed in the Cook era. Beyond the hardware-engineering chain, Cook himself repeatedly moved the project from research to "this has to ship."

Four technical gates keep getting named: whole-device durability, hinge life, Corning flexible glass, and under-display camera. The last one was demoted. The first three decide whether this can be sold to people who are not reviewers.

The sales briefing is blunt: there will be price shock, but Pro customers already proved they will pay for storage. Gen 1's job is to get the category into Apple stores, not to win every row against iPhone 18 Pro Max.
